John Calvin's Calvinists sprung out of Switzerland and spread to northern Europe and southern France. Followers of Martin Luther created the Lutheran Church. Some wanted to retain their Catholic identity, while others saw the political and economic opportunities of independence. The aristocratic elements of society were divided. The Catholic monopoly was being challenged. Although his intentions were to merely reform some Church practices, he unintentionally sparked a religious revolution that would engulf the entire continent. Martin Luther, a Catholic monk and theologian, inspired by the humanist movement and disgusted by the Church practice of selling "indulgences", posted a list of 95 grievances toward the Church. These ports were the beginning of a whole new era of European colonization.īack in central Europe, a new debate was taking shape and shaping popular opinion. These safe havens provided seamen with harbors to anchor in, ports to trade in, and places to rest and resupply. Ports and forts were established along the "Gold Coast" of Africa and the West coast of India. Large cannons could pulverize local ports and the explorers began to establish relations with native peoples along the coasts they sailed. The Europeans loaded their ships with supplies and, most notably, weaponry. Vasco da Gama pulled around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa and Ferdinand Magellan sailed under the tip of South America. These ships had to battle with the Atlantic ocean and survive through torrential seas as they passed the straights. By utilizing navigation tools like the astrolabe and the compass and with the construction of larger, more durable ships, this new wave of explorers could go farther than ever. In doing so, Europeans began to "discover" new territories to the East and West.
